About US States bingo

US States Bingo puts all 50 states on the caller list, from “Alabama” and “Alaska” to “Wisconsin” and “Wyoming”. It suits a fourth- or fifth-grade map unit, a road-trip evening or ESL learners practicing place names. A 5x5 card with a free center shows 24 of the 50 names, so just over half the states are missing from any single card and players must listen to every call.

50 entries make up this US States set. With 24 per card, any single one, Wyoming for example, appears on about 48% of the cards, so in a room of 30 players around 14 of them have it.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 50 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How to host US States bingo

  1. Print the US States cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Utah and South Dakota.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 50 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Utah, North Carolina, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Vermont; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Keep a blank outline map at the front and shade each state as you call it, so students see “Nevada” and “Utah” sit side by side.

  4. Call the paired names together on purpose, such as “North Dakota” then “South Dakota”, to make players read the whole square instead of matching one word.

  5. For younger players, say a clue before the name: the state shaped like a mitten is “Michigan”, the smallest one is “Rhode Island”.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 15 (Connecticut in this set's order) and a blackout near call 45; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

US States bingo variations

  • US States variation

Play Region Bingo: before the game, each player picks Northeast, South, Midwest or West. Only states from their chosen region count, so a player must decide whether to mark “Texas” or let it pass.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Michigan to Massachusetts; on average one card fills after 49.0 of the 50 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 50 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 48.0 calls instead of 49.0.

First 15 calls of this US States set

Seed "us-states" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 16 of the first 30 completes the diagonal from the top right (Wisconsin, Utah, Arkansas and Vermont) on call 10, and card 21 is the first full card on call 46.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the US States bingo list?

50, from Alabama to Wyoming. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 26. The shortest entry is Iowa (4 characters) and the longest is South Carolina (14).

Are all US States bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 10 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 7.54 × 10³⁷ different arrangements are possible from the 50 entries (121,548,660,036,300 different selections of 24).

How many US States bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 15 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 12, and 10 single cards took 19. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does US States bingo take?

An US States game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 15 calls (10-19 in 80% of simulated games), about 3 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 45; with 10 players the first line needs about 19.

Can I print US States bingo cards for free?

Yes, up to 30 unique cards per set at no cost and without an account. Pick how many you need, then use Print cards or Download PDF: each card gets its own page with the title “US States Bingo” on top, and the caller sheet lists all 50 entries in this set's shuffled order.

How do I make my own US States bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 50 entries are already in the generator, so delete Virginia or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
