About Punctuation bingo

Punctuation Bingo mixes the names of the marks, such as “Semicolon”, “Ellipsis” and “Parentheses”, with the jobs they do, such as “Comma in a date”, “Possessive apostrophe”, “Quotes around speech” and “Colon in a time”, plus the capital-letter rules. It suits second to sixth grade writing lessons and ESL learners whose own language punctuates differently.

This Punctuation list is 38 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 14 off each card. That is why one entry (Question mark, say) appears on about 19 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no Exclamation point or Apostrophe.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 38 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How to host Punctuation bingo

  1. Print the Punctuation cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Surprised exclamation, Question mark, Colon before a list, Period and Capital for the word I.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 38 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Sentence capital, Exclamation point, Apostrophe, Question mark and Brackets; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Write a short sentence on the board for each call, missing the mark in question, and let players add it before marking, for example the comma in July 4 1776 for “Comma in a date”.

  4. Group the apostrophe squares, “Possessive apostrophe”, “Plural possessive” and “Contraction apostrophe”, and compare the dog's bowl, the dogs' bowls and it's.

  5. Use the mark names for younger groups and keep the job squares like “Semicolon joins ideas” for older writers by pasting a trimmed list.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (Possessive apostrophe in this set's order) and a blackout near call 35; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Punctuation bingo variations

  • Punctuation variation

Editor's desk: instead of calling a square, the caller reads or projects an unpunctuated sentence. Players mark any square whose rule the sentence needs, then one player shows where it goes, such as the “Colon before a list”.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Surprised exclamation to Slash; on average one card fills after 37.4 of the 38 calls (99% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 38 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 36.7 calls instead of 37.4.

First 15 calls of this Punctuation set

Seed "punctuation" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 26 of the first 30 completes row 4 (Trailing ellipsis, Period, Hyphenated word, Contraction apostrophe and Sentence capital) on call 13, and card 4 is the first full card on call 36.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Punctuation bingo list?

38, from Abbreviation period to Trailing ellipsis. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 14. The shortest entry is Dash (4 characters) and the longest is Period after a command (22).

Are all Punctuation bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 15 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 6.00 × 10³³ different arrangements are possible from the 38 entries (9,669,554,100 different selections of 24).

How many Punctuation bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 12 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 10, and 10 single cards took 14. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Punctuation bingo take?

A Punctuation game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (8-14 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 35; with 10 players the first line needs about 14.

Can I print Punctuation bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 38 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Punctuation bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 38 entries are already in the generator, so delete Apostrophe or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
