About Prepositions bingo

Prepositions Bingo covers position words like “Under”, “Between” and “Opposite”, movement words like “Through”, “Across” and “Toward”, time words like “During” and “Since”, and multi-word forms such as “Next to” and “In front of”. It is a staple for ESL classes and early grammar lessons, because prepositions are short, frequent and easy to confuse.

This Prepositions list is 51 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 27 off each card. That is why one entry (At, say) appears on about 14 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no In or On.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 51 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How long Prepositions bingo lasts

This list was simulated 150 times in random call orders on its first 60 cards. A room of 30 usually has a line by call 15, which is about 3 minutes at 10 seconds a call, and a full card by call 46 of 51.

How to host Prepositions bingo

  1. Print the Prepositions cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Near, Along, Upon, Below and At.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 51 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Down, Around, Within, Despite and Until; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Use a small object and a box: place the object, then call the matching word, so players see the difference between “Into” and “Inside” or “Over” and “Above”.

  4. Group time prepositions together in one round, “During”, “Until”, “Since” and “Before”, and ask for a sentence about the school day with each.

  5. For ESL learners, pause on the tricky trio “In”, “On” and “At” and give one place and one time example of each before players mark.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 15 (Among in this set's order) and a blackout near call 46; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Prepositions bingo variations

  • Prepositions variation

Classroom map bingo: instead of reading a word, the caller describes where something is, such as the clock is above the door. Players mark the preposition they heard, here “Above”.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Near to Between; on average one card fills after 49.9 of the 51 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 51 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 48.9 calls instead of 49.9.

First 15 calls of this Prepositions set

Seed "prepositions" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 13 of the first 30 completes the N column (Down, Among, Like and Onto) on call 15, and card 12 is the first full card on call 43.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Prepositions bingo list?

51, from About to Without. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 27. The shortest entry is At (2 characters) and the longest is In front of (11).

Are all Prepositions bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 12 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 1.42 × 10³⁸ different arrangements are possible from the 51 entries (229,591,913,401,900 different selections of 24).

How many Prepositions bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 15 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 13, and 10 single cards took 18. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Prepositions bingo take?

A Prepositions game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 15 calls (10-19 in 80% of simulated games), about 3 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 46; with 10 players the first line needs about 18.

Can I print Prepositions bingo cards for free?

Yes. All 51 entries are loaded above, so choose a card count up to 30 and press Print cards, or Download PDF to print later at one card per sheet (30 sheets for a full set). The shuffled caller sheet prints separately; nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

How do I make my own Prepositions bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 51 entries are already in the generator, so delete Between or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
