About Nature Walk bingo

Nature Walk Bingo is a scavenger hunt for small explorers in a park, schoolyard or garden. It asks children to find things (“Acorn”, “Feather”, “Seed pod”), to notice textures and shapes (“Rough bark”, “Heart-shaped rock”, “Y-shaped stick”), and to listen for “Bird song” and “Rustling leaves”, so it works for all the senses and for pre-readers with the picture card.

This Nature Walk list is 42 moments long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 18 off each card. That is why one entry (“Puddle”, say) appears on about 17 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no “Feather” or “Ant hill”.

There is no caller: everyone marks a square the moment it happens or is said, such as “Something yellow” or “Your shadow”. The first complete line wins; the caller sheet is the host's checklist.

How many moments until Nature Walk bingo has a winner

Nobody controls the order here, so this table assumes the 42 moments come up in random order: 150 shuffled orders on the first 60 cards of this set. With 30 players the first line comes after a median 12 moments; a blackout needs 38 of the 42, so most games end on a line.

How to play Nature Walk bingo

  1. Print the Nature Walk cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with “Rainbow leaf”, “Something red”, “Fern”, “Clover” and “Ladybug”.

  2. Watch and mark, no caller needed

Players mark a square the moment it happens or is said, “Something yellow” for example. Keep the shuffled caller sheet (opening with “Fallen log”, “Pinecone” and “Your shadow”) as your checklist, or read from it to run a called game instead.

  3. Turn sensory squares into small tasks: children close their eyes for “Wind in the trees” and touch “Soft moss” before they mark it.

  4. Teach a look-don't-pick rule for “Wild berries”, “Bird nest” and “Spider web”; children mark them by pointing, not collecting.

  5. Repeat the walk each season and compare cards: “Dandelion” and “Caterpillar” appear in spring, while “Acorn” and “Pinecone” are easier in fall.

  6. Check the winning line

If the moments come in random order, 30 players see a first line after about 12 of them; ask the winner when each square on the line happened and compare with your checklist.

Nature Walk bingo variations

  • Nature Walk variation

Color palette: each child carries a strip of tape sticky side out and adds a tiny sample of every colored find, then matches the strip to squares like “Something red” at the end.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 moments, “Rainbow leaf” to “Cloud shape”; if they come in random order, one card fills after 41.3 of the 42 on average, so save it for a long event.

  • Picture bingo for pre-readers

Use 3x3 cards with the 23 entries that have a symbol, such as Acorn, Feather and Earthworm.

First 15 entries on the Nature Walk caller sheet

Seed "nature-walk" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints (use it as a checklist, or call from it). With these entries in this order, card 2 of the first 30 completes row 3 (“Rough bark”, “Smooth stone”, “Fallen log” and “Your shadow”) on entry 6, and card 5 is the first full card on entry 39.
