About Music Genres bingo

Music Genres Bingo covers styles from many decades and places: “Blues”, “Bebop” and “Big band” from the first half of the 20th century, “Ska”, “Grunge” and “Dubstep” from later decades, and world styles such as “Bossa nova”, “Highlife”, “Cumbia” and “Zydeco”. It works as a listening game for music classes, a party icebreaker, or a mixed-age activity.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, Music Genres bingo shows 24 of the 46 entries, so each one lands on about 52% of the cards: in a set of 30, Blues or Jazz appears on roughly 16 cards. Card 1 leaves out 22 of them, including Blues, Jazz and Big band, so no single card can mark everything.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 46 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How to host Music Genres bingo

  1. Print the Music Genres cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Ambient, Bachata, Ska, Baroque and Opera.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 46 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Ska, Celtic, House music, Rock and roll and Salsa; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Play a 20-second clip for each call instead of saying the name; players mark the square they think it is, and you reveal the answer after each round.

  4. Group the calls by region, for example “Reggae” and “Ska” from Jamaica or “Salsa”, “Merengue” and “Bachata” from the Caribbean, to add a short history lesson.

  5. With seniors, start with “Big band”, “Rockabilly” and “Barbershop quartet”, then ask which genres their grandchildren listen to.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 14 (Highlife in this set's order) and a blackout near call 42; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Music Genres bingo variations

  • Music Genres variation

Name that genre: the caller plays a short clip without saying the genre; only players who wrote the correct genre on a slip of paper before the reveal may mark that square.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Ambient to Musical theater; on average one card fills after 45.1 of the 46 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 46 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 44.2 calls instead of 45.1.

First 15 calls of this Music Genres set

Seed "music-genres" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 26 of the first 30 completes row 3 (Barbershop quartet, Highlife, Ambient and Heavy metal) on call 17, and card 11 is the first full card on call 41.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Music Genres bingo list?

46, from A cappella to Zydeco. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 22. The shortest entry is Pop (3 characters) and the longest is Barbershop quartet (18).

Are all Music Genres bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 13 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 4.90 × 10³⁶ different arrangements are possible from the 46 entries (7,890,371,113,950 different selections of 24).

How many Music Genres bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 14 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 12, and 10 single cards took 17. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Music Genres bingo take?

A Music Genres game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 14 calls (9-17 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 42; with 10 players the first line needs about 17.

Can I print Music Genres bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 46 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Music Genres bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 46 entries are already in the generator, so delete Soul or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
