About Idioms bingo

Idioms Bingo collects everyday English expressions whose meaning cannot be worked out word by word: “Spill the beans”, “Under the weather”, “Bite the bullet”, “Sit on the fence” and “Beat around the bush”. It suits intermediate and advanced ESL classes, conversation clubs and upper-elementary students, and it works just as well as a warm-up with adults learning English.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, Idioms bingo shows 24 of the 47 entries, so each one lands on about 51% of the cards: in a set of 30, Piece of cake or Break a leg appears on roughly 15 cards. Card 1 leaves out 23 of them, including Spill the beans, Under the weather and Hit the books, so no single card can mark everything.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 47 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How to host Idioms bingo

  1. Print the Idioms cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Easy as pie, Bite the bullet, Give the cold shoulder, Eager beaver and Break the ice.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 47 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Let off steam, Easy as pie, Couch potato, Hit the sack and Piece of cake; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Call the meaning instead of the idiom, such as to feel sick, and let players find “Under the weather” before they mark.

  4. Ask a player to act out the literal picture for funny ones like “Raining cats and dogs” or “Couch potato” before the class explains the real meaning.

  5. Have the winner use two idioms from the line in a short dialogue, for example “Break the ice” at a party and “Call it a day” at the end.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 13 (Go the extra mile in this set's order) and a blackout near call 43; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Idioms bingo variations

  • Idioms variation

Situation bingo: the caller describes a short scene, such as a nervous groom before the wedding. Players mark an idiom that fits, here “Get cold feet”, and must explain their choice if challenged.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Easy as pie to In hot water; on average one card fills after 46.1 of the 47 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 47 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 45.2 calls instead of 46.1.

First 15 calls of this Idioms set

Seed "idioms" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 1 of the first 30 completes the G column (Eager beaver, Piece of cake, Jump the gun, Couch potato and Let off steam) on call 12, and card 20 is the first full card on call 40.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Idioms bingo list?

47, from Back to square one to When pigs fly. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 23. The shortest entry is Time flies (10 characters) and the longest is Give the cold shoulder (22).

Are all Idioms bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 13 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 1.00 × 10³⁷ different arrangements are possible from the 47 entries (16,123,801,841,550 different selections of 24).

How many Idioms bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 13 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 12, and 10 single cards took 16. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Idioms bingo take?

An Idioms game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 13 calls (10-17 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 43; with 10 players the first line needs about 16.

Can I print Idioms bingo cards for free?

Yes, up to 30 unique cards per set at no cost and without an account. Pick how many you need, then use Print cards or Download PDF: each card gets its own page with the title “Idioms Bingo” on top, and the caller sheet lists all 47 entries in this set's shuffled order.

How do I make my own Idioms bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 47 entries are already in the generator, so delete Pull someone's leg or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
