About ESL Weather bingo

ESL Weather Bingo uses the way English speakers actually talk about the weather, with full phrases like “It's raining”, “It's drizzling” and “It's freezing”, alongside nouns such as “Blizzard”, “Heat wave” and “Forecast” and the gear people need, from “Umbrella” to “Sunscreen”. It suits a daily weather routine with young learners and small-talk practice with adults.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, ESL Weather bingo shows 24 of the 40 entries, so each one lands on about 60% of the cards: in a set of 30, It's sunny or It's cloudy appears on roughly 18 cards. Card 1 leaves out 16 of them, including It's sunny, It's cloudy and It's raining, so no single card can mark everything.

The caller reads the 40 entries from a shuffled caller sheet and players mark them; the first complete line (row, column or diagonal) wins.

How to host ESL Weather bingo

  1. Print the ESL Weather cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with It's freezing, Weather report, Hail, Tornado and Flood.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 40 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Forecast, It's foggy, It's drizzling, Hurricane and It's snowing; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Start each lesson by looking out of the window and calling the matching phrase first, such as “It's cloudy”, so the game connects to the real sky.

  4. Contrast the temperature scale in order when you call it: “It's freezing”, “It's cold”, “It's cool”, “It's warm”, “It's hot”, and ask players to line them up.

  5. Ask winners to say what they wear or bring for one marked square, such as “Rain boots” for “It's raining”, which reuses clothes vocabulary.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (Temperature in this set's order) and a blackout near call 36; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

ESL Weather bingo variations

  • ESL Weather variation

Forecast bingo: one player reads a made-up forecast for tomorrow, mentioning four or five conditions, and everyone marks any square they hear. Then the class decides which item from the card they should pack.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, It's freezing to It's drizzling; on average one card fills after 39.4 of the 40 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Picture bingo for pre-readers

Use 3x3 cards with the 13 entries that have a symbol, such as It's sunny, It's cloudy and It's raining.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the ESL Weather bingo list?

40, from Blizzard to Wet. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 16. The shortest entry is Dry (3 characters) and the longest is Weather report (14).

Are all ESL Weather bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 15 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 3.90 × 10³⁴ different arrangements are possible from the 40 entries (62,852,101,650 different selections of 24).

How many ESL Weather bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 12 calls with 30 cards in play, 11 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 14 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does ESL Weather bingo take?

An ESL Weather game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (8-15 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 36; with 10 players the first line needs about 14.

Can I print ESL Weather bingo cards for free?

Yes. All 40 entries are loaded above, so choose a card count up to 30 and press Print cards, or Download PDF to print later at one card per sheet (30 sheets for a full set). The shuffled caller sheet prints separately; nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

How do I make my own ESL Weather bingo cards?

Open Edit words in the generator above: it already holds the 40 entries, one per line. Replace Dry with something from your own group, add inside jokes or names, and the sample card redraws at once. 5x5 cards need 24 entries or more.

Is there a picture version of ESL Weather bingo?

13 of the 40 entries have a picture symbol (☀️ It's sunny, ☁️ It's cloudy, 🌧️ It's raining, 🌨️ It's snowing). Print 3x3 cards with symbol entries such as It's windy and It's foggy for children who cannot read yet; symbols show on screen and in browser printing.
