About French Numbers bingo

French Numbers Bingo covers the number words from “zéro” to “mille”, with special attention to the forms that surprise learners: “soixante-dix” for seventy, “quatre-vingts” for eighty and “quatre-vingt-dix-neuf” for ninety-nine. It uses the traditional spelling, with “vingt et un” and “soixante et onze”, and suits French classes from the first unit on counting to review before an exam.

This French Numbers list is 38 words long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 14 off each card. That is why one entry (deux, say) appears on about 19 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no deux or trois.

The caller sheet lists the 38 words in shuffled order, but they are not read out as written: the caller reads out the number in English and players find the French word. The first complete line wins.

How to host French Numbers bingo

  1. Print the French Numbers cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with vingt, six, soixante, sept and soixante et onze.

  2. Call the clue, not the square

The caller sheet lists all 38 words in shuffled order, opening with cinq, huit, soixante-dix, quatre and dix. For each one, read out the number in English and players find the French word, then tick it.

  3. Show the digits and let players find the words, so they must work out that 75 is “soixante-quinze”, sixty plus fifteen, rather than translating word by word.

  4. Call “quatre-vingts” and “quatre-vingt-un” together and ask why only the first one ends in s, then do the same with “deux cents” and “cent un”.

  5. Mention that Belgian and Swiss French say “septante” and “nonante” for seventy and ninety, so learners recognize them if they hear them.

  6. Check the answers on the winning line

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 11 (quatre-vingt-un in this set's order). Ask the winner to say the clue for each square, which doubles as a quick review.

French Numbers bingo variations

  • French Numbers variation

Phone-number bingo: the caller reads a French-style phone number in pairs, such as “zéro six, quarante, soixante-dix-huit”, and players mark any pair they have on their card, exactly as French speakers group the digits.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 answers, vingt to trente; on average one card fills after 37.4 of the 38 calls (99% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 38 words and no free space; one card is full after about 36.7 calls instead of 37.4.

First 15 calls of this French Numbers set

Seed "french-numbers" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 15 of the first 30 completes the diagonal from the top left (douze, quarante, dix-sept and quatre-vingt-un) on call 14, and card 19 is the first full card on call 34.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the French Numbers bingo list?

38, from cent to zéro. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 14. The shortest entry is un (2 characters) and the longest is quatre-vingt-dix-neuf (21).

Are all French Numbers bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 14 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 6.00 × 10³³ different arrangements are possible from the 38 words (9,669,554,100 different selections of 24).

How many French Numbers bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 11 calls with 30 cards in play, 10 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 14 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How do you play French Numbers bingo?

The caller sheet lists the 38 words in shuffled order, but they are not read out as written: the caller reads out the number in English and players find the French word. The first complete line wins.

How long does French Numbers bingo take?

A French Numbers game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 11 calls (8-14 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 35; with 10 players the first line needs about 14.

Can I print French Numbers bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 38 words; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own French Numbers bingo cards?

Open Edit words in the generator above: it already holds the 38 words, one per line. Replace dix-sept with something from your own group, add inside jokes or names, and the sample card redraws at once. 5x5 cards need 24 entries or more.
