About Fourth of July bingo

A Fourth of July card that pairs the history of 1776 (the Continental Congress, the Declaration, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and John Hancock's famous signature) with the way the day is celebrated now: a backyard barbecue, a parade with a fife and drum, sparklers, a flag cake and the fireworks show after dark. Big family groups can play between the food and the fireworks.

This Fourth of July list is 42 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 18 off each card. That is why one entry (Continental Congress, say) appears on about 17 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no Declaration or Philadelphia.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 42 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

Fourth of July bingo cards for 50, 100 or 200 players

A free set prints 30 unique cards, so a bigger room needs several sets (New shuffle makes the next one) or one Pro set of up to 1,000. The last two columns come from 150 shuffled games on cards 1-200 of this Fourth of July set, at 10 seconds a call.

Running Fourth of July bingo in a big room

  • Number the sets: print set 1, press New shuffle for set 2 and so on. 4 free sets cover 100 players and 7 cover 200; each set's share link reprints exactly the same cards.
  • Plan for shared wins: with 200 cards in play, 28% of simulated games had two or more cards complete a line on the same call (25% with 50). Keep spare prizes or a quick tie-break ready.
  • Expect short rounds: the first line comes around call 9 of 42 with 200 players, against call 13 with 30, so follow it with a blackout or a picture pattern.
  • Count the paper: at one card per page, 200 players need 200 sheets plus a caller sheet; Pro's 2-up and 4-up layouts cut that to 100 or 50.

How to host Fourth of July bingo

  1. Print the Fourth of July cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Picnic blanket, Watermelon slice, Sunscreen, John Hancock and Continental Congress.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 42 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Liberty Bell, Declaration, July 4, 1776, Apple pie and Glow sticks; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Play while waiting for dark and hold 'Fireworks show' until the end; the first rockets can be the signal for the final call.

  4. Use '50 stars' and '13 stripes' as a quick quiz: ask what each number stands for before marking, the states and the original colonies.

  5. Add relay games to the calls: 'Sack race' and 'Lawn chairs' squares can only be marked by players who join that round outside.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 13 (Thirteen colonies in this set's order) and a blackout near call 38; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Fourth of July bingo variations

  • Fourth of July variation

Red, white and blue round: the caller says only a color, and players mark one square showing something of that color, such as 'Watermelon slice' for red or 'Bald eagle' for white.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Picnic blanket to 13 stripes; on average one card fills after 41.3 of the 42 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 42 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 40.5 calls instead of 41.3.

First 15 calls of this Fourth of July set

Seed "fourth-of-july" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 26 of the first 30 completes row 3 (Glow sticks, Continental Congress, July 4, 1776 and Bald eagle) on call 10, and card 20 is the first full card on call 39.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Fourth of July bingo list?

42, from 13 stripes to Watermelon slice. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 18. The shortest entry is Cooler (6 characters) and the longest is Continental Congress (20).

Are all Fourth of July bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 12 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 2.19 × 10³⁵ different arrangements are possible from the 42 entries (353,697,121,050 different selections of 24).

How many Fourth of July bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 13 calls with 30 cards in play, 11 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 15 with just 10. In a hall, extra cards per player only add checking: 200 cards in play already bring the first line to about call 9. For a bigger room, make a second set with New shuffle: two sets are not checked against each other, but with about 2.19 × 10³⁵ possible cards a repeat is vanishingly unlikely, and one caller sheet serves both because every set uses the same 42 entries.

How long does Fourth of July bingo take?

A Fourth of July game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 13 calls (9-16 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 38; with 10 players the first line needs about 15.

Can I print Fourth of July bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 42 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Fourth of July bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 42 entries are already in the generator, so delete Statue of Liberty or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
